Just looking at these hulking beasts makes you feel almost hopeless, especially when you’re going up against them with nothing more than a handgun. However, the further you get into the game the more these monsters appear to have developed in fear-factor, because some of them are gigantic and easily fill the entire screen. To start off with, you have to stand up against your typical zombie-like monsters, where they are similar height to you as the player and they’ll do their best to come running up at you from all angles to try and catch you off guard. It’s a pretty easy system to understand and follow, but that doesn’t exactly mean that the game is all that easy to survive in for too long.Īfter all, it is a survival horror game, meaning that survival is the key! With each passing round, a new breed of horrifying and terrifying monsters come running up into your face, both to frighten and to murder you! Each new monster that comes cropping up in the game do become more and more frightening, with the reasoning being the fact that they vastly vary in size and shape when a new one comes running towards you. With almost any game that uses the horde mode mechanic, you keep playing, with difficulty slowly increasing with every complete wave until you fail to hold them off any longer. The way the game works is that it is effectively a horde mode, where waves and waves of enemies will endlessly come screaming towards you doing what they can to rip you to shreds. Gameplay in The Brookhaven Experiment, as previously mentioned is an FPS game, but in the setting of a survival horror game. Oh no, the game is in actual fact a first person shooter, one that makes use of the HTC Vive and VR in general to its benefit. Now, while the game may use the survival horror genre to its advantage, The Brookhaven Experiment isn’t a poorly designed version of the Slenderman games with the addition of VR. The Brookhaven Experiment when I first heard of the game’s title, my mind for some reason went almost instantly to The Blair Witch Project. I mean, go ahead, use Opera and tell us what you think of it. Oh yeah, le old complaint about Chrome using too much ram. I might be abandoning Opera if that test goes well. I haven't bothered to switch to using LI with Chrome. I still find that it's a bit of memory pig though I admit that I haven't explored whether there are add-ons that can control this a bit. well I've been mainly using Opera for LinkedIn as it seemed to run that site better than most other browsers. The only drawback is that the back button acts oddly when you unsuspend a tab-it'll take you back the `click to unsuspend this tab' screen. Set it up to suspend tabs after five minutes (even pinned tabs) and auto-unsuspend when you switch back to them and waiting for memory swapping is almost a think of the past. What has made Chrome much better is `The Great Suspender' add-on. Javascript seemed to be less of a problem but memory utilization was through the roof with my 8GB desktop swapping all the time and grinding the whole system to a halt while that was happening. Alas, Chrome was actually worse than Firefox. I thought Chrome was going to give me a better `browsing experience' than I'd been getting from Firefox which still seems to refuse to work well with the majority of the Javascript it encounters. (Also, the built-in ad blocker and VPN are nice.)" What has been your experience with Google Chrome and/or Opera? Do you prefer one over the other? I tried Opera and it's like I have a new computer. I have a 2010 MacBook, which I was ready to trash since it had become essentially useless, coming to a grinding halt daily. Slashdot reader mspohr adds: "I should note that this has also been my experience. We benefit from the work of that optimization." "Web developers optimize most for the browser with the biggest market share, which happens to be Chrome. This is exactly the point, according to Opera spokesperson Jan Standal: "What we're doing is an optimized version of Chrome," he said. In fact, Opera works almost exactly like Chrome, except without the resource hogging that makes me want to throw my computer against a brick wall. Because Opera is also based on Blink, I almost never run into a website, plugin, script, or video that doesn't work flawlessly on it. This, after previous dalliances with Safari and Firefox left me frustrated. I switched to Opera, a browser I had previously thought was only for contrarians. After one too many times of having to go into Activity Monitor to find that one single Chrome tab is using several gigs of RAM, I decided enough was enough. With Chrome, my computer crawls to complete unusability multiple times a day. Admittedly, I open too many tabs, but I'd wager that a lot of you do, too. Mspohr shares a report written by Jason Koebler via Motherboard who makes the case for why you should break up with Chrome and switch to the Opera browser: Over the last few years, I have grown endlessly frustrated with Chrome's resource management, especially on MacOS. Remove audio from the video: right click on the video thumbnail and then select the Audio Detach from the drop-down list. And I’ll absolutely agree that it’s a 1000% better than nothing – but it has some inherent risks that I, again, personally would not be willing to accept. Now I realize the appeal of just being able to insert an SD card into the side of your laptop, for example, and use that for backup. Many machines are now coming with SSDs as their system drives.īut that much speed you just don’t need for a backup for a variety of reasons. For the same money you can get at least twice as much traditional hard disk storage or even more. When used as a primary drive and a system drive, you’ll often notice significant improvements in your overall system feel in its speed. The big advantage of Solid State Drives is their speed – specifically their reading speed. While its lifespan is likely to be much longer than the cheap flash memory card that’s used in an SD card, I still wouldn’t use it for backups. You would install it in your machine or into an external drive enclosure – just like a hard drive. It’s not a card you can’t just insert it into an SD slot it’s actually designed to be a hard disk drive replacement. While it technically uses flash memory, it’s of a far higher quality. Actual prices aren’t quite down to the $100 level, but I was actually surprised to see them getting closer. However, a $100, 256 GB SSD (Solid State Drive) is a different beast. I personally would not trust my backups to a cheap SD card. And periodic backups write a lot of data. And as we all know, flash memory wears out more quickly the more often you write to it. A $100, 256 GB SD card falls into the category of what I typically call “cheap flash memory”. Now, I do want to make one clarification here. The difference here is what “lifetime” we expect from the hardware. They also die, though technically, the data stands a somewhat higher chance of recovery should that external drive be a traditional hard drive. Now, of course, the same could be said of any external hard drive as well. Poof! All of the backups you may have stored on it are gone, and typically without any hope of recovery. But if the SD card dies, it’s taken whatever’s on it. If the SD card dies, you get a replacement for the card. There are a few things that make me uncomfortable.įirst, realize what a lifetime warranty really means. You know, my gut tells me that this is a bad idea. On my main system, I had once tried out of curiosity to enable desklets from system settings, only to have them not display. I wasn't too worried about it-except from then on, the panel would on restarting cinnamon about half the time become unresponsive to the mouse, and the hot corner also disabled. Purging Cinnamon from a gnome-shell desktop and reinstalling did not help, nor did removing all non-default applets. Rolling back to version 1.7.1 DID help-and displayed a "system settings" desklet I had never seen before. I clicked on it, clicked on "remove this desklet" and it disappeared. Re-updated to 1.7.4, logged out and back in, and the panel freezes were back. I replaced /usr/share/ cinnamon/ js/ui/desklet. Last month I was playing around with Desklets on Linux Mint and I thought to develop one of my own. js with a blank (empty) file, and deleted /usr/share/ cinnamon/ desklets entirely and the problem has yet to return. So, why not choose a topic that is relevant and people would love to get some regular updates on. So, I made a Linux Mint Desklet that shows COVID-19 stats for India. When running Cinnamon from cinnamon -replace in terminal, I would get on only those instances where the panel and hot corner were unresponsive references to a line 823 in /usr/share/ cinnamon/ js/ui/layout. The exception would always be an inability to convert a decimal value somwhere around but not equal to 4 to an integer, and somewhere in all the text before it was the word "desklet" which reminded me of exactly when the problem started and what might fix it. Purging didn't remove whatever had changed when I first played with the desklets in system-settings, but removing the desklet code from cinnamon seems to have decisively fixed it. |
